Stock Donation / DAFs
Donating appreciated stock is one of the best ways to contribute to non-profit organizations! We will happily accept donations of stock, and you can do so in two ways
First, and recommended, is by setting up a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) for yourself and recommending grants through your DAF. For more info, see the section on DAFs below.
Second, we can accept direct stock donations. This is a manual process, so please get in touch with us at donate@rentoncivictheatre.org.
Why donate stock?
Donating stock directly allows you to avoid capital gains taxes on the appreciated value, maximizing the impact of your donation. You also receive a charitable deduction for the full market value of the stock, reducing your taxable income. This method often allows you to give more than if you sold the stock and donated the cash.
Example: Imagine you bought stock for $5,000, and it’s now worth $10,000. If you sell it, you’d owe taxes on the $5,000 gain. But if you donate the stock directly, you avoid the capital gains tax and get a charitable deduction for the full $10,000. This way, both you and the charity benefit more than if you sold the stock and donated the cash.
Employer Matching
Did you know your donation to Renton Civic Theatre could be doubled or even tripled? Many employers offer matching gift programs, allowing you to maximize your impact at no extra cost to you. Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs)
A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving vehicle that allows individuals to contribute assets, such as cash, stocks, or other securities, into a specialized account and receive an immediate tax deduction. Once funds are in the DAF, they can be invested and grow tax-free, potentially increasing the amount available for future donations.
One of the key benefits of a DAF is flexibility. You can make contributions to the fund at any time, receiving the tax benefits immediately, but you aren’t required to distribute the funds to charities right away. This allows you to be strategic about your giving, supporting causes that align with your values when the timing is right.
Another advantage is the ability to support a wide range of nonprofits, including smaller organizations that might not have the infrastructure to accept complex gifts like stock or other assets. The DAF provider handles all administrative tasks, including grant distribution and record-keeping, simplifying the process for both the donor and the recipient.
Overall, a DAF is a powerful tool for those looking to maximize the impact of their charitable contributions, offering tax efficiency, growth potential, and the ability to support multiple causes easily and effectively.
You can open a DAF at many of the popular brokerages, but we at Renton Civic Theatre recommend Schwab Charitable, as it has no account minimum and one of the lowest administration fees.
When recommending a grant through your DAF, ensure the mailing address is correct (it is not a P.O. Box, as some list by default):

RENTON, WA 98057
